You may feel like your are losing control over yourself. Inside of you there is an important secret, that is obsessing your thoughts more and more. You are wondering how to handle two pains: that of keeping the secret and that of not. Whether you remain silent or not someone will be hurt, another person or yourself. The choice between compassion (your heart) and self-protection (your head) is in your hands, and so is the potential of a third way (holding both head and heart). The first step lies in understanding the secret origin. Did (a) someone trusted you with a secret or (b) did you learn about someone else secret accidentally? Remaining silent in (a) shouldn’t be too difficult because you accepted the trust invested in you. Regarding (b), the dilemma is more complex. Let’s say that fortuitously you witness your best friend spouse kissing someone else in public. Do you tell your friend or remain silent? The second step is to evaluate the implications. Will it help or hurt your friend to know? There is no urgency and remaining silent for now is better. The third step will present itself at the right time for a subtle or direct conversation. Waiting in silence is the third way.
